Itrax XRF Core Scanner

When you want the best

The Itrax XRF Core scanner is the flag ship among XRF scanners, with several unique features, and with world class performance in terms of speed of analysis, speed/performance ratio, detection limits, data reproducibility, and documented ability to quantify the concentrations of the elements found in samples. It is installed at almost 50 leading universities and research institutes world wide. The large number of scientific articles containing Itrax Core Scanner data that are published every year is also an indicator of the significance of this instrument.

Useful combination of techniques

Itrax Core Scanner combines XRF, x-ray radiographic imaging, optical imaging and magnetic susceptibility measurement, to provide detailed geochemical information where all chemical elements are determined simultaneously. Having these different measurements in one instrument means reliable matching of the positioning of the different measurements. The amount of reliable information that can be retrieved from a sample in a few minutes or hours has made this instrument a central resource in many laboratories.

Flexibility

Itrax is well suited for scanning of wet sediment resting in liners, as well as drill cores with round cross section, since measurements are done without touching the sample surface. The high speed available at any scanning resolution makes it possible to scan wet sediments without having to apply a foil on the sample surface, thereby avoiding a possible formation of a water film under the foil, which may affect the data. It is even possible to analyze the rounded surface of drill cores with good results, since there is no need for a good contact with the sample surface in order to get reliable data.

Power to determine

You can expect very good detection limits for all detected elements. Determination of PPM level concentrations of elements is a matter of one or a few seconds per scan point for almost all chemical elements. Each measurement is performed close to the sample surface, without touching it. Itrax keeps track of this distance at every point along the sample, and placed the measuring equipment in the right position, also when the surface is somewhat uneven. This feature saves a lot of time compared to solutions that need to move the measuring device up and down between each point.

Reliability

Reproducibility is unfortunately not something that you can always expect in XRF scanning, but with Itrax, already when applying short time for analysis at each point, repeating the scan produces very similar results. One example of this is shown below:

The two graphs, one in red and one in black, display the same Manganese profile in one sample, as recorded in two consecutive scans. Each profile contains 3,000 measurements with a spot size and steps of 0.2 millimeter. In each spot the measuring time was one second only. The average Manganese concentration is ~0.07%.

From overview to detail at highest speed

The scanning increment size, or step size, is variable, allowing for quick overview scans as well as detailed high resolution scans. Itrax does not lose speed as the step size is decreased, unlike most XRF scanners. This is a really time saving feature for high resolution scanning. The smaller the steps, the more time saved, making a big difference at steps of one millimeter or less per point. This difference grows with smaller steps because Itrax has no slit system to decrease the beam size. Slits decrease the x-ray intensity at the same time as they decrease the beam size, while instead Itrax is equipped with a unique scanning x-ray beam construction where the x-ray intensity is not lost.

Contact free

Itrax Core Scanner is non destructive and does not touch the sample surface during analysis. This saves a lot of scan overhead time, makes this instrument good at handling sample cracks, and allows for good analysis of flat surfaces as well as the rounded surfaces of drill cores.

Support

The software has a graphical user interface which is easy to handle and puts the user in control of the scan parameters. One of many unique software features is the analytical quality feedback from the software, giving the user an indication of the data quality, point by point. Our in-house software for element quantification delivers robust quantitative data for all elements in good accordance with other techniques, based on calibration with certified reference standards. Our staff stays in contact with the users to give support. We know this instrument, and we know x-ray physics, so we can answer your questions when it comes to x-rays.
