Essential wood data
The Itrax Multiscanner combines density measurements using digital x-ray radiography, XRF multi-element analysis and RGB images. It is developed for analysis of wood, but also speleothem and other small, flat samples that can be mounted vertically. This high capacity instrument scans over the samples with a very fine x-ray beam, to provide a density image as well as XRF analysis. The scanning feature makes it possible to gather the wood data at a correct angle in each and every point. The density information is registered directly into a digital medium, so all following work is done through the computer.
The Multiscanner utilizes soft x-rays of high intensity, and sample scanning is therefore quick with high data precision in every digital data point. The lateral resolution for density measurements is variable down to 10 micrometers in the core direction, allowing for determination of parameters like year ring width and maximum density in late wood. When the bulk is well known like in e.g. wood, a calibrated and precise density value can be calculated for each microscopic point of the sample. The whole analytical procedure from setting parameters to working on the data is computer based. The sample holder contains eight slots, each 28 centimeters long, able to house several samples in unattended multi sample batch scanning.
XRF directly on wood
The XRF offers an analytical resolution of 50 micrometers in the core direction, and allows for precise and non destructive determination of a range of elements from Mg and heavier. The elements that are usually detected in wood include Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb and Sr. More elements can be detected depending on concentration in the wood, and time for analysis. Elements in wood is a field of growing scientific interest, e.g. for monitoring geographical in combination with temporal distribution of pollution over time.
